Bunkai (分解) means "analysis" or "disassembly", is a term used in Japanese martial arts referring to process of analysing kata and extracting fighting techniques from the movements of a "form" (kata).
The extracted fighting techniques are called Oyo.
Bunkai is essence of karate. It is application of kata for self defence.
Karate was basically developed with purpose of self defence. Karate means empty hand techniques. Soo just by learning kata and kumite you would never know how to use karate in self defence.
Each kata can have different bunkai. Every own individual can make its own bunkai.
Bunkai is generally in karate leagues performed by 3 people in group, they shows how one person can defend attack through moves of kata.
Now a days, Many karatekas are just focusing on learning kata and kumite with purpose of playing in Championship. Even people are 7th dan, but they are not practicing most important part of karate after kihon, that is bunkai.
What is meaning of learning karate if we could not apply it for our protection??!!
Soo by just repeating kata's you would only get a medal in championship it won't help you anywhere else.
But kata should be make perfect soo that when we are using any move for self defence we would be reciprocating that with same power and speed.
For understanding importance of kata you definitely need to learn bunkai.
